About Compress PNG to 500 KB
PNG is a lossless format, which means a typical screenshot or UI mockup can easily weigh 2–6 MB. For bug reports, design hand-offs, and documentation sites, you want something closer to 500 KB — and that usually means converting to a high-quality JPEG while keeping the filename and resolution usable.
This tool takes your PNG, re-encodes it as a high-quality JPEG behind the scenes, and bisects the quality setting until the result lands under 500 KB. You get a visually near-identical image that is a fraction of the size.
Transparency is not preserved — by definition, JPEG cannot store an alpha channel. If you need transparency and a small file size, use a WebP converter instead. For everything else (screenshots, photos, flat graphics), compressing PNG to a smaller JPEG is the right trade-off.

Compress PNG to 500 KB — Frequently Asked Questions
How do you compress a PNG to 500 KB?
PNG is lossless, so the only way to shrink it meaningfully is to re-encode as JPEG. We do that with a quality setting chosen by binary search to land just under 500 KB, and save the result as .jpg.
Why didn't my image reach exactly 500 KB?
We target 'under 500 KB', not an exact number. A 420 KB output still clears any 500 KB gate. If your PNG has huge dimensions or very detailed content we downscale it once and retry at minimum quality.
Will I lose transparency?
Yes. The output is a JPEG, and JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent pixels become white. If you need transparency, try compressing to WebP instead.
Can I keep the .png extension?
The file is saved with a .jpg extension so your operating system and viewers open it correctly. The dimensions stay the same unless downscaling was required.
Is the compression done on my device?
Yes. Everything runs inside the browser tab using WebAssembly. Your screenshots and design files never leave your machine.
