## About this tool

100 KB is a meaningful number for the web: images under it barely register on page-load metrics, and plenty of upload forms enforce it as a hard cap. A PNG screenshot, being losslessly encoded, usually weighs 1–5 MB — far past the line. This tool gets PNG files under 100 KB by re-encoding them as tightly tuned JPEGs.

We bisect the JPEG quality setting to land just under 100 KB, downscaling the image once if even minimum quality cannot fit. For screenshots, photos saved as PNG, and flat graphics, the visual difference is small; the size difference is a factor of twenty or more.

The honest caveat: the output is a .jpg file, because PNG's lossless encoding simply cannot hit 100 KB for most real-world images. Transparency becomes white. If your form accepts JPEG — and almost all do — this is the right trade-off; if it strictly demands the PNG format, see the FAQ below.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do you get a PNG under 100 KB?

PNG is lossless, so meaningfully shrinking it means re-encoding as JPEG. We run a binary search on JPEG quality to land just under 100 KB and save the result with a .jpg extension. If the image is too detailed even at minimum quality, we downscale its dimensions once and retry.

### Does the file stay a PNG?

No — the output is a JPEG saved as .jpg. That is what makes the 100 KB target reachable. If your upload form strictly requires the .png extension, check first whether it also accepts JPEG (most do). Converting the compressed JPEG back to PNG would inflate the file again, often back over the cap.

### What happens to transparency?

It is lost — JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent pixels become white. If you need transparency and a small file, convert the PNG to WebP instead; for screenshots and photos, transparency rarely matters.

### Why didn't my image reach exactly 100 KB?

We target 'under 100 KB', not the exact figure — an 84 KB output clears any 100 KB gate. Very large or detailed PNGs get downscaled once at minimum quality, and the result flags clearly if it still could not fit.

### Are my screenshots uploaded anywhere?

No. The compression runs in your browser using WebAssembly. Screenshots of dashboards, internal tools, or private chats never leave your machine.
